On the Waterfront (1954)

Posted on January 28, 2007. Filed under: Films, mtime |

On the Waterfront (1954), possibly represents Marlon Brando at his prime. This is perhaps only the fourth or fifth film I’ve seen him in (the first obviously being The Godfather, the other few include Apocalypse Now and A Streetcar Named Desire), and my impression of this actor is definitely heavily influenced by his performance in [...]

Saw III (2006)

Saw (2004) was brilliant for its originality. The concept was innovative, the twists were fresh, and the plot was wickedly sick but also mind probing. It will never be reckoned as a masterpiece, nonetheless, it will probably become a cult favorite.Saw II (2005), was unsatisfying. My main complaint was that it had too many characters [...]

The Black Dahlia (2006)

Posted on January 18, 2007. Filed under: Films, mtime |

It’s hard to be critical towards such a film. But it’s hard not to be either. On the one hand, The Black Dahlia has stunning sets and costumes, and the feel is great. The cinematography feels “old”. The mood is brilliantly set. I was all set for an engrossing plot. And that’s where on the other hand [...]

最近看过的电影

Posted on January 13, 2007. Filed under: Films, mtime |

The Man who shot Liberty Valance (1962):John Wayne和James Stewart联合出演的西部片,情节引人入胜,剧情压力一直累积到最后的高潮。Lee Van Cleef在里面有个小反派角色,已然可以看到日后出演The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly的影子。

Recently viewed films: summary

Posted on December 19, 2006. Filed under: Films, mtime |

Quick comments on a few films recently viewed:Syriana: this is the kind of film that’s hard to enjoy, but intellectually challenging (and rewarding). It stirs up more questions than it answers, but I guess that’s the whole point. Anyway, keywords are oil, national interest, conspiracy etc.Run Lola Run: no explanation necessary, just catching up work. [...]

24: Season 5

Posted on December 4, 2006. Filed under: Films, mtime |

This weekend I had some spare time, so I did some catching up with one of my favorite TV series: 24.Having not watched the series in a long time, I found it hard to recall what happened to all the characters at the end of Season 4. However that soon ceased to pose an issue: [...]

Batman Begins (2005)

Posted on November 27, 2006. Filed under: Films, mtime |

Simply put, Batman Begins is a great film. Christopher Nolan does an absolutely perfect job of capturing the dark mature side of the comic.Christian Bale arguably does a better job as Batman than even Michael Keaton. Keaton’s batman was sophisticated, mature. Bale is a little hot-headed, learning to face his inner anger. He manages to [...]

Miami Vice (2006)

Posted on November 26, 2006. Filed under: Films, mtime |

As a small Michael Mann fan, I was quite disappointed with Miami Vice. I was looking for some of the same kind of intense storytelling in Heat, however this film just feels to drag along. It would be quite an unfair comparison, to put Miami Vice and Heat together. To start off, the latter has Al [...]

X-Men 3: The Last Stand (2006)

Posted on November 26, 2006. Filed under: Films, mtime |

As the 3rd and (perhaps final) installment of the X-Men franchise, The Last Stand carries the series tradition of exploring philosophical themes through some rather intense action.Compared to the 2 previous films, the 3rd film certainly didn’t feel as ambitious. The over-the-top special effects are no longer that awe-inspiring, and there isn’t a strong sense [...]

V for Vendetta (2006)

Posted on August 17, 2006. Filed under: Films, mtime |

I am feeling quite contradicted at this film. On the one hand, the film has a gripping flow, and I paid almost full attention throughout the whole 2 hours, which is something I’ve not done in a while now (compared to the likes of 16 Blocks and Inside Man).On the other hand, though, the storyline [...]
